Gap Year set to push deadlines

COMEDIAN Andy Lee is unfazed by next month’s air date for Hamish and Andy’s Asian Gap Year even though the series is far from complete. Lee and partner in crime Hamish Blake return to Asia next week to film the remainder of the Channel 9 series, but only half of the six episodes are actually in the can.

Nine has scheduled the series premiere for Monday, July 8.

Lee says they’ll still be in the process of filming and editing the last three episodes when the season starts. ‘‘It’s still being shot,’’ says Lee. ‘‘We’ve already done one stint of eight or nine countries and we plan to head over next week.’’

One of the pair’s major stops for their return trip to Asia is Bangkok, where they are converting a bar into a TV studio to accommodate an audience. ‘‘It’s so we can have expats and travellers come and watch the slide show from our bar,’’ Lee says.

Lee doesn’t seem too fazed with the tight deadlines, saying they ran the gauntlet for last year’s Hamish And Andy’s Euro Gap Year when they were still filming in the week the episode went to air.

But that was nothing to compared to their days filming a Caravan Of Courage series in 2010 for Channel Ten.

‘‘We can turn it around really quickly and I think we were sending them through about two days before they went to air last year,’’ he says. ‘‘When we did Caravan of Courage: Great Britain and Ireland, the last segment of the show was being fed while the first part of the show was going to air.’’

And good news for fans, Lee said there’s likely to be another Gap Year in 2014 because ‘‘there are still plenty of places to explore’’.
