AMER­I­CAN drama The News­room will be fast­tracked to pay TV chan­nel Show­case from Mon­day, July 15, air­ing just hours af­ter its US broad­cast at 5.30pm and again in prime­time at 8.30pm. Aaron Sorkin ( The West Wing, The So­cial Net­work) cre­ated the drama that fol­lows the tri­als and tribu­la­tions of news an­chor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), ex­ec­u­tive pro­ducer MacKen­zie McHale (Emily Mortimer) and a news team with the mis­sion to pro­vide ac­cu­rate news in a world of cor­po­rate agen­das. Sea­son two plays out over five days lead­ing up to Elec­tion Day 2012 and uses flash­backs to hint at events through 2011 and 2012. One story arc in­volves a wrong­ful-ter­mi­na­tion law­suit made by a staff mem­ber al­leged to have doc­tored a re­port about a US drone strike. Re­turn­ing cast in­clude Sam Water­ston, John Gal­lagher Jr, Ali­son Pill, Thomas Sa­doski, Olivia Munn and Dev Pa­tel. They will be joined by re­turn­ing guest stars Jane Fonda and Hope Davis. New cast in­clude Mar­cia Gay Harden as Rebecca Hal­l­i­day, a lawyer hired to de­fend ACN staffers in its wrongfultermination case; Hamish Lin­klater as Jerry Dan­tana, brought up from Wash­ing­ton to tem­po­rar­ily re­place Jim when the lat­ter heads to the Rom­ney cam­paign; Grace Gum­mer as Hal­lie Shea, a re­porter who com­petes with Jim on the Rom­ney cam­paign trail; and Ri­ley Voelkel as Jennifer, the stu­dent hired by Will as an in­tern in the sea­son one fi­nale.
