Newsroom express from the US
AMERICAN drama The Newsroom will be fasttracked to pay TV channel Showcase from Monday, July 15, airing just hours after its US broadcast at 5.30pm and again in primetime at 8.30pm. Aaron Sorkin ( The West Wing, The Social Network) created the drama that follows the trials and tribulations of news anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) and a news team with the mission to provide accurate news in a world of corporate agendas. Season two plays out over five days leading up to Election Day 2012 and uses flashbacks to hint at events through 2011 and 2012. One story arc involves a wrongful-termination lawsuit made by a staff member alleged to have doctored a report about a US drone strike. Returning cast include Sam Waterston, John Gallagher Jr, Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn and Dev Patel. They will be joined by returning guest stars Jane Fonda and Hope Davis. New cast include Marcia Gay Harden as Rebecca Halliday, a lawyer hired to defend ACN staffers in its wrongfultermination case; Hamish Linklater as Jerry Dantana, brought up from Washington to temporarily replace Jim when the latter heads to the Romney campaign; Grace Gummer as Hallie Shea, a reporter who competes with Jim on the Romney campaign trail; and Riley Voelkel as Jennifer, the student hired by Will as an intern in the season one finale.
