Short and sweet, and hard to beat
ARE dwindling attention spans to blame? One-act plays are suddenly all the rage, with a sideshow of works from the world’s largest 10-minute play festival, Short+Sweet Theatre, in The Space, at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, next week. More than 200 artists perform 40 new plays at venues from Brisbane to the Gold Coast as part of Short+Sweet Sydney sideshows. From small beginnings at Sydney’s Newtown Theatre in 2002, the event now encompasses theatre, dance, musical theatre and cabaret, presenting more than 300 of the best 10-minute plays by local and international writers. The event has helped launch the careers of countless actors, writers and directors and this year passes an astounding milestone – 1000 Australian plays on the stage. The event’s sideshows have spread to Melbourne, the Central Coast, Canberra, Brisbane and now the Gold Coast, Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand.
Short+Sweet plays The Space, at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, on Tuesday, August 2, at 7pm and August 3 at 3pm and 7pm. Tickets are $24 adults and $22 concessions.
