Jazz legends come to life
THE Gold Coast Jazz and Blues Club presents The Billie, Ella & Louis Show, starring Dan Barnett and Tricia Evy (pictured) and The Anthony Howe Trio, in the Paradise Room, at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, tomorrow night. The show marks the Gold Coast debut of French chanteuse Evy and acclaimed Sydney-based singer/ trombonist Barnett. The musicians join forces to salute three of the greatest songsmiths to ever swing a phrase – Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, Evy is described as one of France’s best-known young jazz vocalists. Her passion for singing is inspired by artists such as Fitzgerald, Holiday and Mel Torme. A favourite with Sydney audiences at the annual Manly Jazz Festival, Evy imbues her performances with Caribbean influences and often sings in French. ‘‘I’m singing with my heart and I put a Caribbean touch in every song – it’s a part of me,’’ she says. ‘‘I think that when you sing deeply with your heart you can touch people, no matter what the nationality.’’
