The urge to record a Christmas album and head home is only Human Nature

The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - LIVE ’N’ LOUD -

HUMAN Nature (pictured) are taking a break from the bright lights of Las Vegas and coming home for Christmas. Human Nature – The Christmas Album is the group’s first yuletide collection, although they feature on several charity albums and are Carols by Candlelight regulars. ‘‘Every year people would say ‘you guys should do a Christmas album’ and we say ‘yeah we should, it would be good, wouldn’t it?’ Then 24 years later, we finally do one,’’ Phil Burton says. The group wanted to inject some soul into the songs, Mike Tierney says. ‘‘(We wanted to) bring some of that Motown element to the songs and not do a crooner kind of Christmas record,’’ he says. The album features a duet with Jessica Mauboy for a flirtatious version of Sleigh Ride. It also includes Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), a doo-wop version of White Christmas and a song that weaves together Silent Night and O Holy Night. Human Nature have been performing in Las Vegas since 2009, spending more than three years at the Imperial Palace and then moving to a residency at The Venetian in January. ‘‘We’ve done 900 shows over the last four and a half years and because the audience changes every night it’s kind of a chance to try and build the perfect show,’’ Burton says. ‘‘You don’t have to feel like you have to put on a brand new show every night.’’ Toby Allen says it is a thrill to perform across the road from the likes of Elton John and Celine Dion. ‘‘It’s cool being part of the mix of entertainers in Vegas,’’ he says. Celebrities who have dropped in to see Human Nature’s Motown show at the casino include Diana Ross, Shania Twain, Meat Loaf and Mike Tyson. ‘‘The founder of Motown, Berry Gordy, came and saw our show,’’ Burton says. ‘‘It was kind of a surreal moment for us; these four white Aussies doing the music he created with him in the crowd.’’ The group has a contract at The Venetian until the end of 2014. ‘‘All going well, we could stay longer,’’ Allen says. ‘‘We are always thinking about what it is we’re going to do next. We are definitely going to move forward into recording other material. What that is at this stage we’re not 100 per cent sure.’’

Human Nature: The Christmas Tour plays Jupiters Hotel & Casino on December 13-14.
