A smokin’ role

DOMINIC West has revealed that nailing Richard Burton’s recognisable voice proved a big challenge. The Wire star even resorted to drinking and smoking to get the voice right for his portrayal of the Welsh star in BBC drama Burton and Taylor. ‘‘I couldn’t get the voice. So one night I drank and smoked a lot,’’ he recalls. The BBC biopic about the couple, which also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Elizabeth Taylor, is set in 1983, a few months before Burton’s death.
