AUSTRALIA’S leading lady of the stage, Marina Prior (pictured), will mentor talented young locals next week for The Greenroom Project season finale before she returns to The Arts Centre Gold Coast on September 26 with her intimate new show, The Encore Tour. Prior, who boasts a musical theatre career spanning nearly three decades, steps out from behind the characters she made famous to put herself on display to the world in the new show. ‘‘People have come to see me in shows but it’s always been scripted and organised,’’ she says. ‘‘A lot of the time I’ve done an accent and been in costume, so I don’t even look or sound like myself. This is a great chance for people to get to know the real me and so this tour really is an expression of who I am and where I’m at now in my life.’’ Prior shot to stardom after playing leading lady Christine in The Phantom of the Opera and has performed leading roles in famous musicals such as Cats, Les Miserables, Guys & Dolls and Mary Poppins. Her shows will include some of her favourite songs, ranging from her early folk pop music to hits from the 1970s and 1980s and extracts from classic musicals. She will also recall anecdotes from her career, including some humorous ‘‘stage disasters’’. ‘‘Things tended to go wrong every now and again but those moments now make the best stories,’’ she says.

Marina Prior guest stars at The Greenroom Project, in The Basement, at The Arts Centre Gold Coast on Monday at 7pm. Prior’s The Encore Tour plays the Arts Theatre on September 26 at 8pm.
