BRISBANE artist TJ Quinton, aka Tim Loydell, has teamed up with Ahliya Kite to explore a new avenue of live music. Loydell recently returned from a solo tour of New Zealand, where he began experimenting with live sampling and looping. Like ‘‘learning a new instrument’’, he says the process inspired him to delve into different sounds in a live setting. ‘‘I dabbled with it in New Zealand but it was really hard without another person. I felt like a tapdancing showman,’’ he says. ‘‘It makes a difference having someone else there. It’s terrifying but it can be pretty fun.’’ Kite and Loydell are touring their new and show. Loydell says the pair’s different music backgrounds blend together seamlessly on stage. ‘‘Ahliya’s stuff is quite like Portishead or Bjork – it’s down-tempo electro with female vocals and real soundscape samples,’’ he says. ‘‘We have been mixing it up and doing electronic shows with some-stripped back acoustic versions also. It’s a good opportunity for people to see something different.’’ The duo is working on more material for a possible collaborative album. In the meantime, Loydell says he’s working out what direction he wants to steer his solo sound. ‘‘I get lost between doing guitar intensive covers, playing with the sampler and loops and doing hip-hop tracks,’’ he says. ‘‘I am doing plenty of creating and I have been writing new tunes.’’ Loydell released a debut TJ Quinton album, Sorry Business, last year and teamed up with Byron Bay animator Shanti des Fours for a video for single, Strange To Care. ‘‘It’s beautiful,’’ he says.
