Pete puts heart into it
THE honesty, heart and soul ingrained in blues music is what keeps Pete Cornelius anchored to the genre. The Tasmanian singer-songwriter began piano lessons at the age of six, picked up an acoustic guitar at nine and released his first album at 13. When Cornelius first laid hands on an electric guitar at 11, he realised the instrument could act as an extension of himself. ‘‘The electric guitar can be a voice. It really sparked something new,’’ he says. Many moons later, Cornelius says traditional blues music is what keeps him ticking. ‘‘The authentic vibe of it really makes me happy,’’ he says.‘‘But you have to put your own twist on it – that’s part of keeping things real and interesting.’’ Groundswell is album number nine for the gifted musician, and it sees Cornelius dance around a broader scope of musical flavours. ‘‘The album also has funk, soul and alternative country. I recorded and mixed it myself,’’ he says. Cornelius is touring the album with different bands in each city. Tomorrow night, when he serenades the Gold Coast, Cornelius will hook up with two Brisbane musicians. ‘‘It will be very raw and unrehearsed so the fun factor will be right up there,’’ he says.‘‘The show is energetic, lively and interactive. It’s going to be fun and I will keep things energetic and up.’’ Come a Little Bit Closer plus some classic doo-wop and pop songs. Show at 8pm. Tickets $45.
