AUSTRALIA'S NEW REALITY TV SHOW
The Face departs from other reality modelling shows by having up-andcomers compete for work, executive producer Marty Benson says.
More than 1500 models applied for the pay TV series which is helmed by supermodel Naomi Campbell.
Campbell, who was in the US and UK versions, is also the executive producer.
The two dozen models on the short-list in the launch episode have a maximum of two years’ professional experience each and most are signed to agencies.
The top 24 are whittled down to a dozen by the end of episode one and split into three groups of four. Each team is mentored by Campbell or Australian models Nicole Trunfio and Cheyenne Tozzi. Benson says The Face is to Australia’s Next Top Model what singing reality series
The Voice is to The X Factor. “The Voice looks for singers that haven’t broken through and this is about models who are signed with an agency but haven’t made the big time,” Benson says,
The format gives rise to fierce competition between both girls and mentors. The mentor of the team that wins a challenge eliminates a model from an opposing side.
“One of the first things Naomi said to the girls ‘is you are not here to make friends, you are here to win the competition,” Benson says. Viewers might think The
Face is just another version of the Fox8 series ANTM which attracts amateur models. But The Face differed because the reward for each challenge was real work, not just a photo shoot for a model’s portfolio.
“They are real campaigns for real brands,” Benson says.
Of those who auditioned, less than half landed interviews and just a few dozen made it through to stand before Campbell, who ultimately cherry-picked the final batch.
Benson says the interview process was complex because there were three interested parties to appease: Campbell, Foxtel and the production company Shine.
“We saw 700 and from that we were looking for a top 40,” Benson says.
“There’s Shine, Foxtel and team Naomi, so I needed to find the best 40 girls and then between the three parties we needed to decide on the best 24.”
