FULL OF LIFE
Motown, soul, rhythm and blues – soul sensation Lisa Hunt is ready to thrill audiences with all the genres this week at her Twin Towns shows
You don’t quickly forget a Lisa Hunt gig. The powerhouse vocalist has been known to get even the most cardboard of characters moving and shaking with her infectious groove.
Beginning her career singing in a gospel church, Hunt laid the foundation for her soulful voice in a traditional American way.
In a live setting, the soul sensation combines Motown, soul and rhythm and blues, covering favourites by Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and The Supremes to name a few.
The Byron Bay-based songstress has been the backup singer for some of the great names in Australian rock, such as Jimmy Barnes, and has toured with Ronan Keating, Macy Gray, Mousse T and Tina Arena.
She has also shared studio time with Diesel, Darren Percival, Jon Stevens and Midnight Oil.
Hunt brings her energetic live show to the Gold Coast this week for a run of shows.
“We’re all booked up at the moment – the word is spreading,” she says.
“Every second week we seem to be flying to places like Melbourne or Cairns.”
Hunt says for her, all roads lead to Aretha.
The first half of her show is devoted to the retro soul and groove of Motown, with the music of Aretha Franklin front and centre. The second half of her show is dedicated to disco.
“It gets more intense as the night goes on,” she says.
“The second part is a disco inferno. People heat up when they drink.” Lisa Hunt plays free shows at Twin Towns Breezes Stage tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 7pm.
