LET’S CUT TO THE CHASE
Spotlight Theatre’s thrilling musical Sweeney Todd and Phoenix Ensemble’s new production of Jesus Christ Superstar are not to be missed
After a quiet month of openings, Spotlight Theatre’s Sweeney Todd starts this week and is sure to bring a bumper crowd. Director Tess Burke has created a razor-sharp production of Sondheim’s good-oldfashioned revenge thriller. The local production of the musical, which opened on Broadway in 1979, features a cast of 30 performers led by Lionel Theunissen as Sweeney Todd, a man driven mad by his desire for revenge. Phoenix Ensemble’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar is expected to draw great audiences when it opens tomorrow night, particularly with Adam Bartlett in the title role. Director Morgan Garrity will be a busy girl next year with jobs at Spotlight and other places on her schedule. Dressing Roomers hears The Pajama Game is into the last three weeks of rehearsals and all is going very well. It would appear that the key word with this show will be “bright” – the music, costumes, set and the very talented faces that will be appearing on stage. GCLT’s popular Drinks with The Director for The Pajama Game will be held at the theatre on Tuesday at 6pm. This will feature scenes from the show, some inside information on the actors and, as promised, the launch of the full program for 2015. Auditions for the first show of 2015 Signal Driver by Patrick White will be held at the GCLT Green Room, Sunday at 9am. Details from director Noella Johnson on 5591 8493 or email firstname.lastname@example.org – a cast of four is required. The magical world of Alice comes to the Tweed Valley this week with Murwillumbah Theatre Company’s new pantomime, Alice’s Adventures. Adapted and directed by Bryanne Jardine, this production of Lewis Carroll’s wonderfully fantastic books – Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass – maintains the imaginative plot and brilliant use of nonsense in a modern context. Alice’s Adventures is staged at Murwillumbah Civic Centre. I’m now an expert at folkloric dancing! Great to see kids, in particular, learning traditional dances and performing them for tourists. There’s so much colour everywhere. Watch this space. More from me from Mexico and Central America next week, then on to New York!
