MUSICAL SUCCESS OF NOTE

La Cage aux Folles by Melbourne’s The Production Company is a truly world-class production well worth the trip south

The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - DRESSING ROOMERS PLAY - KATE PETERS

Yours Truly spent the last weekend in Melbourne catching The Production Company’s last show of the year – Jerry Herman’s La Cage aux Folles. It stars Australia’s favourite song and dance man Todd McKenney, the fabulous Simon Burke and (for one night only) Anne Wood. The show is sensational. It is staged differently from the other productions I’ve seen (including the original Australian version, in which Todd appeared as a cagelle in the chorus). The choreography is great, the singing and staging some of the best I’ve seen this year and I suggest anyone in Melbourne over the next week or so should get a ticket. It’s as good as anything you would see in New York or London. The only opening this week is tomorrow night’s Brazilian dance show Braz Dos Santos’ Brazouka. The show was brought to the Gold Coast by Pamela Stephenson Connolly and features 18 brilliant dancers and narration by Billy Connolly. Catch the show at Jupiter’s Casino from 7pm. Continuing until this Saturday is Javeenbah Theatre’s Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, Gold Coast Little Theatre’s The Pajama Game and Ballina Players’ High Society. Zeppelin Travel has a few seats left for its theatre coach party from the Gold Coast to Brisbane for Kylie Minogue’s Kiss Me Once Tour. The Saturday night show date is March 21, 2015. Tickets $165$215. Phone 5557 9888 for details. Chatterbox Sound has sent this message to theatre companies: “Many of you will be aware of the frequencies changes for radio microphones and portable PA systems that comes into effect on January 1, 2015. Many people do not understand what is happening, and many have already bought new equipment on the new legal frequencies. However, just because the frequency is legal, does not mean it will work in the area you are using it. Different frequencies are required in different areas of Australia. For example, a frequency that will work in Nerang will not work in Arundel. So before you spend your hard-earned money – please check that the person you are buying from does understand what is happening and what equipment will do the job you yourself require. Chatterbox can supply new systems, and also retrofit some of your current portable PA systems with up-to-date radio transmitters and receivers that will work everywhere.” Sounds like good advice, particularly for companies with limited technical support. Contact Chatterbox Sound on 5529 9969 or 0418 817 816. Javeenbah Theatre has announced auditions for Play it Again Sam this Sunday at 2pm. Directed by Roger McKenzie, it is based on the popular Woody Allen film and is about a recently divorced film magazine writer who is trying to restart his romantic life. Rehearsals start on January 13. More information will be given at the audition. The play runs from March 13-28. Call 0403 810 940 for more info. Congratulations to all nominees in the forthcoming Gold Coast Area Theatre Awards. A full list of nominees is available on the Awards website. Awards will be given out at the Presentation Night at the Paradise Room, Arts Centre Gold Coast December 16. We hear there are still a handful of tickets available through the Arts Centre on 5588 4000. See you in a crowded foyer real soon!
