He won’t be standing in front of the audience in his underwear this time, but Michael Falzon will be having a swinging time on stage.

The 42-year-old former Brisbane student says he lost 10kg in preparation for his 2011 role as rock star Stacee Jaxx in the popular Rock of Ages production, but this time he’ll be fully dressed in a suave suit alongside three co-stars in his self-produced show Swing on This.

“I’d just moved back from London where I’d had a dose of the Heathrow injection (putting on weight in the UK capital),” Falzon says of his preparation for the Stacee Jaxx role.

“I would work out in the morning, go to rehearsals and then do weights in the evening. By opening night I’d lost 10kg in 10 weeks.

“There’s no motivation quite like having to wear underwear in front of a theatre full of people.”

The musical theatre performer has kept up running for fun since.

He will appear alongside established performers Luke Kennedy, Matt Lee and Ben Mingay in a swing concert on the Gold Coast.

It will include the music of Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr, Frank Sinatra and Robbie Williams, as well as rock and pop songs turned into swing, all accompanied by an 18-piece live big band.

“It’s brash, very cheeky and is pretty electric due to the talent I share the stage with,” Falzon says.

“I looked around at who my friends in the industry were and who I wanted to share a stage with but never had a chance, due to us always working in different productions.

“To get four leading men on stage together might be the Holy Grail. We’re having a great time and the audiences seem to appreciate that.”
