ANYTHING BUT THE ORDINARY

Have you heard of Noel Fielding? You’re either drawing a blank or insulted to have been asked.

One-half of cult hit series The Mighty Boosh and the creator of Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy, the English comedian who looks more like a delicate alien rock god has landed in Australia to tour his show An Evening with Noel Fielding.

When he and comedy partner Julian Barratt did a world Boosh tour in 2008-09, they sold out arenas of 15,000 people and partied like rock stars. This tour is a bit toned down.

But anyone who has spent any time inside Fielding’s psychedelic universe knows the live stand-up show will not be a man droning into a mic about trams and politics for two hours.

There will be music, animations, costumes and several of his oddest characters, played by Fielding and fellow Luxury cast members Tom Meeten and Fielding’s brother Mike, best known as the laidback shaman Naboo in The Mighty Boosh.

“He smashes it in the show,” Fielding says. “He just comes in and takes the roof off. I work for 50 minutes using all my skills from 20 years, he walks out and says ‘Orright?’ – using the same voice he does for every character – roof off.

“I guess I just like working with other people rather than on my own. I do stand-up and after about half an hour I get sick of the sound of my own voice. I want someone else to come on.”

Fielding and Barratt weren’t shy about going to the dark side of comedy, with creepy creations and some that were downright nightmarish, such as the Crack Fox, with needles for claws.

“I think there are some kids who have grown up with the Boosh who’ll never forget some of those images.”

Be prepared: an evening with Fielding will get weird.
