JENNIFER HAWKINS: NEXT TOP MODEL LINE-UP IS TESTAMENT TO LOCAL TALENT
Three Gold Coast girls will cement the Glitter Strip’s place in the fashion world as
Australia’s Next Top
Model returns for its ninth cycle tonight.
Lucy Markovic, Jordan Burridge and Cassie Hargrave are the three local darlings set to grace the small screen alongside nine other hopefuls.
ANTM host Jennifer Hawkins says the influx of Gold Coast girls to the reality show cast is testament to the talent here.
“Girls are really beautiful up there,” she says. “They are confident as well, which helps in this business.”
But Jordan, Lucy and Cassie have some tough competition.
The three models-in-themaking are facing off against what Jen calls “the most incredible” batch of contestants yet.
“Every season is different but this time the producers have dwindled it down to 12 amazing girls,” she says.
“I had my standouts straight away but overall it’s a roller-coaster. Some go well one day but others will step up the next. It changes all the way though.” Having last aired in 2013,
ANTM returns to Fox 8 tonight.
Last year’s season was postponed after the sudden death of former judge Charlotte Dawson.
This year, Sydney model Cheyenne Tozzi will fill Charlotte’s shoes as a judge alongside designer Alex Perry and model Didier Cohen.
On tonight’s opening episode, Tyra Banks reads a special tribute to Charlotte.
“We are celebrating her – she was a jokester and her spirit lives on in the show,” says Jen.
Cheyenne isn’t the only new addition to this season of

ANTM, which first aired in Australia in 2005.
There’s also a format change, which means judges have to award points for each modelling assignment.
“The scoring system is really good – it makes everyone honest and means the judges have to give examples of how the girls can improve,” says Jen.
Reality TV show queen Kim Kardashian also makes an appearance this season.
The guest judges include Kelly Osbourne, one of the original supermodels Linda Evangelista, French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier and Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio.
“It’s really good to have Kim Kardashian on the show and the guest judges bring something new to the table – they have a wealth of knowledge about the industry,” says Jen.
“Kelly Osbourne is a firecracker. She goes head to head with Alex. It’s all a lot more honest this season.”
While Jen says it was never her dream to become a model, she can understand why so many young beauties long for a life under the bright lights.
“This show is a real chance for undiscovered girls,” she says.
“When you are starting out you have to be self-aware and self-confident. Some of the girls come across as arrogant, so they have to tone that down.”
As for the makeovers this season, Jen says there’s the usual mix of fears and tears.
“The transformations are amazing – I announced what everyone was getting and they all screamed like crazy. Some were crying in shock,” she says.
Midway through the season is when Jen thinks we start to understand the personalities of the contestants.
“There are a few breakdowns,’’ she says. “And a few dramas with different girls teaming up. But it makes for good reality TV.” Australia’s Next Top Model returns to Fox8 for Season 9 tonight at 7.30pm
