Jamie Durie has done the round of the TV networks but his latest job sees him land on Ten’s The Living Room.

“I’m a first-time offender,” laughs the gardening and design mogul. “But it’s been great, I’ve really jelled with the whole team.”

As of this week, Durie will be making several appearances on the show sharing makeovers and design ideas for your own outdoor space. And lest you think it’s going to be tough to recreate yourself, the 44-year old promises they’ll be achievable.

“I encourage all the viewers to steal my ideas and try it themselves in a weekend,” he says.

“That’s really what it’s about – it’s an open forum for fresh ideas and how to reconnect with your garden again through all seasons, not just in spring.”

The Living Room isn’t Durie’s only Aussie project in the works.

Having moved into furniture design in recent years he’s ready to open up his own flagship store in Sydney this September.

And he’s hoping to spend far more time on our shores as a result, saying that his burgeoning design career is where his future passions lie.

“Never did I think that studying design out in the suburbs of Sydney would enable me to nurture a career that was this fruitful,” he says.

“I just love designing furniture. It allows me to travel and to work from anywhere in the world. I can touch a million people with one chair rather than one person with a milliondollar garden. It’s a much more rewarding form of design.”

But while he’s looking to shift focus, Durie is still passionate about reconnecting people with the great outdoors through his work on TV.

“We surround ourselves with so much work and technology that we’re all suffering from nature deficit disorder, particularly in suburban areas,” he says.
