AT HOME ON STAGE
Byron Bay musician Jesse Pumphrey really enjoys playing live, as he will be doing at Elsewhere on Wednesday night
Jesse Pumphrey knows the magic of music lives on stage.
A regular on the local touring circuit, the Byron Bay-based singersongwriter hasn’t stepped foot into a recording studio for a couple of years.
Backed by a drummer and a bassist, Jesse prefers to let his songs speak for themselves in a live setting.
“Playing live is the fun part – it’s what I really enjoy,” Jesse says.
The talented guitarist is part of the Gold Coast Music Awards celebrations.
Taking place on Wednesday night at Burleigh Brewery, the inaugural awards highlight the diversity and growth of the local industry.
More than 240 nominations were received for the six categories, which include live music venue, local music champion and artist of the year.
“It’s great for these people to get the recognition they deserve,” says Jesse.
Taking to the stage as a trio, Jesse is playing the Gold Coast Music Awards afterparty at Elsewhere on Wednesday night with local acts Von Villans and Govs.
“We were going in a blues direction, but lately we’ve been inspired by a band from the States called All Them Witches – they’ve pulled me back in a psych rock direction,” Jesse says.
Jesse first picked up the guitar at the age of eight.
The talented musician, who lived on the Gold Coast for two years before relocating to Byron, says it was an old next door neighbour who inspired the hobby.
“He gave me lessons for $5 a week and ended up giving me a guitar for $5,” he says.
“He was playing a lot of Eric Clapton, lots of Hendrix, blues and rock.
“He taught me how to listen to music and how to love playing it.” Jesse Pumphrey, Von Villans and Govs, Elsewhere, Wednesday night.
