In re­hearsal on the Gold Coast are Top Hat Pro­duc­tions’ Cock­tails with Noel & Ger­tie – A Mar­vel­lous Party! It’s a mu­si­cal cel­e­bra­tion of the wit, mu­sic and peo­ple in the life of the cen­tury’s most tal­ented gay artiste – Noel Cow­ard and his life­long friend Gertrude Lawrence. Also in re­hearsal are Javeen­bah’s For­bid­den Broad­way, an ir­rev­er­ent look at the big stars and shows of the past few years; Nep­tune Theatre’s Christ­mas at Hart­ford Hall and GCLT’s Dim­boola Spotlight’s The Boy from Oz. Also in re­hearsal are Yours Truly and dou­ble-Mo Award win­ner Kirri Adams, who will ap­pear for one show only at the Arts Cen­tre’s Base­ment with their new cabaret show, Two Red­heads in Search of a Match! Book on 5588 4000 (the show is half sold al­ready). Date is Satur­day, Novem­ber 21, at 7.30pm. Cur­rently play­ing are Tu­gun Theatre’s Gaslight, Phoenix Theatre’s A Funny Thing Hap­pened on the Way to the Fo­rum and Tweed Theatre’s 12 Danc­ing Princesses. Great fund­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties for lo­cal the­atres and theatre prac­ti­tion­ers ... My sources tell me that the pow­ers that be are re­for­mu­lat­ing and ex­pand­ing the RADF com­mit­tee (Re­gional Arts De­vel­op­ment Fund) which al­lo­cates grants. New mem­bers of the com­mit­tee are be­ing sought. Also some of you may like to make an ap­pli­ca­tion in the next RADF round. More in­for­ma­tion is on the RADF web page. Also early next year the coun­cil will be an­nounc­ing a three-year round of fund­ing to link to the Com­mon­wealth Games. It ap­pears there will be a three-year rolling fund of $30,000 given in each year in the lead-up to projects for the Games. Opera Ea­gle’s Nest, in as­so­ci­a­tion with Gold Coast City Coun­cil, present a se­ries of con­certs at He­lensvale Cul­tural Cen­tre from Septem­ber 4 to Novem­ber 6. Kick-start­ing the sea­son is their zany A Night at the Opera with two shows on Septem­ber 4. It prom­ises to be a morn­ing/ evening of great singing and loads of laughs. Dress­ing Roomers hears that a kind Gold Coast theatre fan wishes to make a do­na­tion of two naval of­fi­cers’ uni­forms and one black suit with a mono­grammed coat pocket. Hol­ly­wood di­rec­tor David O. Selznick is de­ter­mined to turn the epic novel Gone with the Wind into a great movie. He sacks his writer and goes into lock­down for one week with pro­ducer Vic­tor Flem­ing and sought-af­ter screen­writer Ben Hecht. They must pro­duce a script in that time with a writer who has not read the book. Ron Hutchin­son’s Moon­light and Magnolias, which is based on real events, ex­plores the week’s chaos. It will be staged at Play­ers Theatre from Septem­ber 4-19. bal­li­naplay­ Au­di­tion­ing this Sun­day is So­cial Climbers for GCLT – con­tact di­rec­tor He­len Maden on Com­ing soon – fab­u­lous news on three cruises for mu­sic lovers – coun­try, rock ’n’ roll and mu­sic theatre. Lo­cal com­pany and sup­porter of all things cul­tural on the Coast, Zep­pelin Travel, is sup­port­ing these events, which will fea­ture some of the big­gest names in Aus­tralian and in­ter­na­tional showbiz. More news next week. Lots of AGMs hap­pen­ing around this time, and in­ter­est­ing pro­grams for 2016 be­ing launched. The Coast is cer­tainly busy theatrically – or, as we hear di­rec­tors opine – are there just too many shows be­ing staged, for the some­times small tal­ent pool avail­able. In­ter­est­ing times!
