The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - SHOW - KATE PETERS

Dressing Roomers was lucky enough to catch the opening night of Harvest Rain’s season of Into the Woods this week at QPAC’s Concert Hall. It was a great reinterpretation of the super musical, featuring Rhonda Burchmore as the witch, Rachel Beck as the baker’s wife and Eddie Perfect as the baker, supported by a talented, energetic, well cast ensemble. The set was beautifully designed by Josh McIntosh to use the space with split levels and the magnificent orchestra under the direction of Jason Barry Smith in full view. Some standout character work from former Gold Coaster Steve Hirst as Cinderella’s Prince and Kimberley Hodgson as Red Riding Hood. Continuing the momentum of the 2015 series of Dancing with the Stars, Hearts Aflame Productions will present its fourth annual Dance Spectacular at Tyalgum Hall on Saturday, October 17. With the historic village hall transformed into a glittering ballroom, this year’s show will feature three of Australia’s leading dancesport couples, introduced by former Dancing with the Stars judge, Mark Wilson. Undefeated Australian champions Jarrod and Jayne Dawson will showcase a glamorous repertoire of new vogue routines and Justin and Amy Sharrock will perform an exciting mix of Latin American and showdance, including their dazzling lindy hop. The dance sets will be complemented by operatic soprano, Petah Chapman. Petah is a rising star of the opera world, regularly performing as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and touring with the famed Seven Sopranos. Dinner and show packages for the Tyalgum Dance Spectacular are $75 and include a twocourse pre-show dinner at Flutterbies Cottage Café. Show only tickets are $50. Held at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, the show will feature the songs of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Doris Day, Peggy Lee and Billie Holiday. The show stars Di Clarke and Jan Lennard. Dressing Roomers is sad to hear of the difficulties being experienced by several of the local theatre companies in securing the necessary rights for 2016 playbills. Seems several of the shows have been publicised as part of companies’ seasons for next year, then have had rights withdrawn or had them become unavailable for some reason.

On a wider note – we hear that several big shows are either auditioning or about to audition – Fiddler on the Roof (starring Anthony Warlow), Kinky Boots and My Fair Lady. It will be interesting to see if any locals get a guernsey! Phoenix Theatre Beenleigh has released its 2016 program. The stellar line-up includes The Wedding Singer, Next to Normal, Emerald City, The Little Mermaid and Spicefire Cabaret Festival. All info at
