Angela Bassett had already appeared in two series of American Horror Story, so what made the talented actress check in to this hotel?
Actors step into the unknown when they sign on for American Horror Story. Just ask Angela Bassett who has starred in three series of creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s ( Glee) anthology horror series.
In American Horror Story: Coven, Bassett played real life 19th century voodoo queen, Marie Laveau.
In last year’s American Horror Story: Freak Show she sported three breasts as sideshow performer Desiree Dupree.
Now, in American Horror Story: Hotel, Bassett is busy kissing Lady Gaga in her role as film star Ramona Royale. American Horror Story: Hotel is set at the sinister Hotel Cortez, owned by The Countess (Gaga), in downtown Los Angeles.
Ramona and The Countess are former lovers. Bassett and Gaga have already filmed a kissing scene in bed.
“I never know what they (Murphy and Falchuk) have planned (for me),” Bassett says. “I’ve never been in a situation like this with a woman before. There is a sexually fluid dynamic that is going to occur at the hotel.
“Ramona is a woman who is spurned by The Countess. What began as something so wonderful doesn’t continue.”
The Hotel Cortez comes under scrutiny from homicide detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley), who is on the trail of the Ten Commandments Killer. American Horror Story regular Sarah Paulson plays hotel resident Hypodermic Sally and Kathy Bates, who had a beard in Freak Show, is hotel manager Iris.
Mat Bomer plays Iris’s son Donovan, Chloe Sevigny is Lowe’s wife Alex, and Cheyenne Jackson is fashion icon Will Drake.
Most bizarrely, Denis O’Hare plays Liz Taylor, a barman whose get-up is inspired by movie star Elizabeth Taylor.
“This season harks back to the first season ( American Horror Story: Murder House) and is much more rooted in the honest, primal fears that the first season was,” Murphy says.
“I think the true horror fans loved the first season because it really is a very psychological season.
“We were really inspired by (a) hotel surveillance video that showed a girl getting into an elevator in a haunted hotel who was never seen again.” Before American Horror
Story, Bassett, who is married to actor Courtney B. Vance ( Law & Order: Criminal Intent) was best known for serious biopics.
