STAN & DELIVER
The former Australia Idol winner is back on the road touring nationally and tomorrow it’s the Gold Coast’s turn to see the man in action
Coolangatta Kiwi Stan Walker isn’t the kind to blow his own trumpet. However, when it comes to his one-night stand with his band in Jupiters Theatre tomorrow, Walker is happy to sing his (and their) praises.
“I think this is my best tour I’ve done so far,” he says. “It’s going to be so good. I’ve never played there (Jupiters Theatre) … I’m really excited.”
“It’s always good to get back in the saddle when it comes to touring.”
Now based in Sydney, the former Coolangatta menswear salesman has had great success as an actor, singer and TV presenter here and in New Zealand since his Australian Idol win in 2009.
And while Walker, 25, admits he’s fallen in love with making movies after starring in three feature films ( Mt Zion, Born To Dance and the upcoming Nerds in Love), nothing compares to the hit he gets from performing in front of a live audience.
“It’s been a while since I’ve toured Australia,” he says. “I’m glad to be doing it again.
“I have days off in between (shows) and I don’t like it – I just want to do a show.”
A mesmerising vocalist, he is also a multi-instrumentalist, arranger and songwriter.
“I’m very particular when it comes to my arrangements,” Walker says.
“When they come to my show, people get a surprise.
“I’m always putting new things in and adding new sounds to make it more Stan.”
The New Zealand Music and Deadly award winner promises a mix of “all my old school stuff and new stuff” at tomorrow’s show, part of his Truth & Soul Australian tour to promote his fifth album.
“I’m playing with my fourpiece band ... they’ve been my band for five years ... and two backing singers and four dancers,” he says.
Stan Walker, Scott Newman and hip hop dancers The O’Neill Twins play Jupiters Theatre tomorrow at 8pm. Tickets are $56.
