SITTING PRETTY

Seven dwarves, a pesky pea, existential crises and vocals to make you say “wowee” – Gold Coast theatre has got it all going on this week

The Gold Coast Bulletin - Play Magazine - - DRESSING ROOMERS - KATE PETERS

Local party-booker extraordinaire Doreen Hinton is offering two special theatre parties to Spotlight Theatre’s forthcoming production of Breast Wishes on September 25 at 2pm and October 1 at 7.30pm. Tickets will be $26. Call Doreen on 0403 810 940. A portion of the income from the show’s rights will be donated to charity. Gold Coast Little Theatre’s first show of 2017 – Back to the ‘80s – will be directed by well-known local dancer and choreographer, Andrew Ross-Graham. Yours Truly caught the opening night of Blanc de Blanc last weekend. The very popular Brisbane Festival Spiegeltent offers burlesque, acrobatics and a celebration of champagne. Cutting-edge stuff. Saturday night saw the opening of Ballet Preljocaj’s Snow White. The choreography for this brilliant, contemporary version of an old tale is exceptional, as was the music from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Gold Coast Jazz and Blues will swing into spring this month, with pianist and headlining vocalist Craig Schneider, who will lead an orchestra of the young stars of the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music. Legends such as Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra will have their music honoured. First show is on September 23 at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. Opening soon at Javeenbah Theatre is a musical that begs the eternal question: Do I stay as I am or leap brazenly into the unknown? Director Trevor Love has assembled a talented seven-piece cast who bring to life Jason Robert Brown’s Songs for a New World. The production explores the inner monologues of people who have reached that moment, the time when they must face perhaps their most important decision ever. Runs from September 16 until October 1. Tweed Theatre Company is working towards the opening night of The Princess and the Pea – a Youth Musical, written and directed by Natalie Trengove with lyrics and musical direction by Jim Fury. It opens September 24. Lots going on in rehearsals too – Ballina Players’ The Patrick Pearse Motel, GCLT’s How to Succeed in Business, Spotlight’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood and many more.

Virginie Caussin as Snow White and Sergio Diaz in Ballet Preljocaj’s Snow White.
