LAUGHS FOR DAYS

No one wants to let a good thing go, so for giggle buddies Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor, creating Rosehaven was a must-do

Utopia actors Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor liked working together so much they decided to create a TV show they could both star in.

The comedic actors have written and are starring in the ABC show Rosehaven, which they filmed in McGregor’s home state, Tasmania.

“Basically, Luke and I wanted to find something where we could talk rubbish to each other,” Pacquola says.

“Our characters on Utopia did a lot together, and we became a duo and hung out between scenes. So one day we just went: ‘Oh, we’ve got a very similar stupid sense of humour, do you want to try and write something together?’”

The test was going to Tasmania together for 10 days where they worked with McGregor’s estate agent parents to do some research for the show. In Rosehaven, McGregor’s character Daniel returns home to help his mother out with her real estate business and his friend Emma (Pacquola) follows him there.

“We’d never spent more than a day together so we went to Tasmania to live with Luke’s parents, and drove around together in a hired car, worked together and by the end, we were still OK to be in each other’s company,” she says.

The idea stemmed from the pair’s real-life relationship, so naturally there is something of themselves in their characters.

“Emma is me when I’m in a silly, immature mood but she’s like that all the time and she doesn’t have the fear of consequences that I do. She’s like what I would like to be in my mind if I didn’t have rent to pay,” she says. “And Daniel is Luke if he’d never found standup. He’s trying to exist in a corporate world but he’s just not very good at it, so he’s trying to prove himself and prove he’s grown up and is an adult now.”

The pair drove around Tasmania looking for small towns to inspire them.

“There’s stuff that you have in every small town like an op shop. We just love the idea that the person who works in the op shop knows everything about everyone because they’re getting brought in everybody’s stuff,” Pacquola says, adding that they would love to do another season of the show.

“We want to keep going back to Tassie and grow the Tassie industry. It’s a wonderful place to work and we wanted to make something that could continue there,” she says. Rosehaven, Wednesday, 9pm, ABC
