8.30PM, SBS MA. 2013. Chi­we­tel Ejio­for stars as Solomon Northup, the New York State cit­i­zen kid­napped and made to work on a plan­ta­tion in New Or­leans in the 1800s. Steve McQueen di­rects from a script he co-wrote with John Ri­d­ley, based in part on Northup’s mem­oir. Far from com­fort­able view­ing, an un­flinch­ingly bru­tal look at US slav­ery that is ut­terly bril­liant.

8.30PM, NINE M. 2002. A des­per­ate fa­ther holds a hos­pi­tal ward hostage to en­sure his son re­ceives the life­sav­ing op­er­a­tion he can’t af­ford. This ma­nip­u­la­tive and su­per­fi­cial drama wastes the tal­ents of its cast, which in­cludes Den­zel Wash­ing­ton and Robert Du­vall.
