WHAT A YEAR
BREXIT, TRUMP, BOWIE AND THE BUDGIE 9, REMINISCING WITH CHARLIE PICKERING
It seems 2016 has been a shocker for almost everyone, what’s your analysis? Well, I think it’s the year that the world officially abandoned facts as being useful when making big political decisions. I think it’s the year we saw just how much the internet can screw us up. And it’s a year that we lost some legends, like Bowie, and it reminded us of a better time. That said, what a comedy goldmine.
Do you think this year has been worse overall than previous years? I dunno. The plague was bad. World War I, World War II, they were bad. I think we need a little perspective. Everything in the internet age has to be the best or worst to get clicks, but it doesn’t make it so.
Do you think there’s a chance that every year from here on could be this impactful? Absolutely. We live so fast now that we cram five years’ worth of nonsense into a year, so we can absolutely do this again. We have not yet begun to cram a year full of idiocy!
Is social media just making things worse? Sure, but at the same time it’s really helped us all have a loud, angry opinion before we’ve had a chance to think of it. So let’s not write it off completely. In all seriousness, I think history will make us look like idiots for how we’ve carried on on social media. Me included.
2016 is/was year of the monkey in Chinese zodiac, which is said to be the least lucky year in the cycle ... I don’t think that’s a thing. But I don’t want that to be interpreted as a slight against the Chinese people. Just horoscopes in general.
Are there positive things that happened in 2016 that people are overlooking? Yes, of course. The Olympics and Paralympics were incredible. And we found an old muesli bar in a jacket! What a year!
We’ve pretty much covered the year now ... why should people tune in? Because the way the world is going, there may not be another one ... in all seriousness. The Yearly is the best way to not take all of this serious stuff so seriously.
