MARK KNIGHT RISES
One of the world’s top artists will be in the house to show a new generation there’s more to the electronic scene than press-play DJs
He’s spent the past two decades playing the biggest stages in the world, but tomorrow night will be Mark Knight’s first gig on the Gold Coast. Club night Eden, operating out of Platinum Nightclub, will host the house music, production and record label heavyweight.
At this intimate gig, audiences can expect more than a “press-play DJ”.
“In this day and age you should be an artist and your set should be reflecting, representative of what you can do as an artist,” he says.
“I like to think we’ve moved on from those days of turning up and just playing other people’s records but I think that we’ve regressed in some ways, in that some people at the top of the tree aren’t putting anything back. Some of the bigger DJs aren’t doing anything musically to support the scene.”
For Eden co-owner Matthew Blank, having Knight perform won’t just be a treat for dedicated Knight fans but will also show the younger generation a different side to the industry.
“Mark Knight has been an idol of mine since I started DJing in 2008 so when we got the opportunity to host him here on the Coast we couldn't say no,” he says.
“I want the younger generation to see that there is more to the electronic scene then people yelling out onetwo-three jump and throwing cake at people. I want them to come and experience a guy that's been around the scene for more than 20 years and really gain some respect.”
With our dynamic club scene, the Gold Coast is a hot spot for established and aspiring DJs and producers. Being well versed in both aspects of electronic music, Knight says originality and consistency are key.
“I see too many kids copying other things and jumping around from style to style until they get a hit.
“Don’t copy other people – what has worked for me is that I’ve never tried to be anything but Mark Knight.
“Do music from the heart. Do something you genuinely love and it’ll take off.”
Mark Knight, Platinum Nightclub tomorrow night, doors open 9pm. Tickets from $30.
