Don’t be late for this very important date, with three hotly anticipated Gold Coast stage shows set to open on the same night
March 24 is shaping up to be a big night for theatre openings on the Gold Coast. Currently in rehearsal, Javeenbah’s Sweet Road, Spotlight’s Boyband: The Musical and Ballina Players’ Blithe Spirit will all open that Friday night. Tweed Theatre’s Broadway Blockbusters in Concert is next to open on April 21 and GCLT’s Crown Matrimonial kicks off May 6.
Theatre companies all over the Coast are hustling wouldbe directors to submit proposals for their 2018 programs – it seems to get earlier each year. There are often problems with acquiring performance rights for shows and getting a mixed program right. Announcements will start to come out in a month or two.
Brisbane’s Twelfth Night Theatre has just announced the return of Australian star Donna Lee’s new show The Doris Day Story. She had a great success in 2016 with her Petula Clark Show, and will now present her new production from April 1 at 2pm and 7.30pm. Great to see this former Menopause star, and daughter of the great Aussie star Gloria Dawn, returning to the stage in her own one-woman productions. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster on 13 61 00.
Indefatigable theatre party organiser Doreen Hinton is at it again, this time for Spotlight Theatre’s March production of Boyband: The Musical. Directed by Katie Steuart-Robins, the musical follows the turbulent chart-topping rise to fame of a fictitious boyband, where five young stars take us back to the beginning to reveal the gritty truth behind the music business. Theatre party shows on offer are March 26 at 2pm and April 8 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $26. Call Doreen on 0403 810 940.
