TOAST OF THE COAST
It changes perceptions, pushes boundaries and tells incredible stories, but above all, Bleach* Festival is a celebration of our community
LOUISE BEZZINA, BLEACH* ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Bleach* Festival is a festival of place – it is inspired by the people, its environment and the vibrancy and energy of the Gold Coast.
The vision for Bleach* is to create a celebration for the city that makes the local community proud and leaves visitors in awe of our distinctive, diverse arts scene. Bleach* is such a big part of my life and it has been a journey that has provided me with the great privilege of working with hundreds of artists and creatives across the city.
To learn such extraordinary stories about incredible people from the Gold Coast and then be trusted to tell them through works such as Shifting Sands in 2016 and Churaki Hill in 2017 is a great honour. Through Bleach* we can amplify these stories of such greatness to the rest of the country.
We have pushed the boundaries about how art can be made and experienced in what a lot of people would see as one of the most unlikely places in Australia. The festival has brought an incredible mix of artists to the city from around Australia and overseas.
The amazing thing about great festivals is their power to make a city shine. It is the one time each year that you can go out every night of the week and see something new.
You can take a chance on something you wouldn’t normally see or do and meet new people.
I have been astonished to see the response from the Gold Coast community each year.
They come out and support us and take a risk.
In 2017 we have put together an ambitious collection of works that explore and interrogate the relationship between sport and art and the playful moments of collaboration where these experiences collide, merge, interact, conflict and compliment. You will get a taste of this across the entire program, but in particular with works such as Fun Run, The Forwards (by Gold Coast’s own Shock Therapy) and Highly Sprung.
As we lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, we show our sense of determination, passion and strength through new projects created especially for Bleach*: Frank Enstein, Saltwater Sessions, Wired at Paradise Point and Here I Am!
Come and join us and enjoy your festival – Bleach* Festival!
