One of Aus­tralia’s most ex­cit­ing young stars of the op­er­atic world will per­form an in­ti­mate af­ter­noon con­cert at Tyal­gum’s Flut­ter­bies Cot­tage Cafe this Satur­day and Sun­day. Aus­tralian so­prano Michelle Ryan re­turns to the tiny vil­lage to per­form in the up-close­and-per­sonal venue of The Lit­tle Shop Next Door. Michelle has been ap­pear­ing in lead­ing roles in op­eras in the Ber­lin Opera Academy and The Weimar Opera Stu­dio and in Septem­ber she will start full­time train­ing at The Royal Academy of Mu­sic in Lon­don. This week­end she’ll per­form a se­lec­tion of arias, light opera, clas­si­cal mu­si­cal theatre and Celtic mu­sic. Af­ter an un­avoid­able up­set with the ad­vised venue, Tweed Theatre Com­pany will present its April pro­duc­tion Broad­way Block­busters. This mon­tage of mag­i­cal, mu­si­cal mem­o­ries and mo­ments has been de­vel­oped by mu­si­cal di­rec­tor St­ef­fanie Kriz and re­alised on stage by ac­com­plished di­rec­tor, chore­og­ra­pher and lo­cal the­atri­cal iden­tity Tracey Kriz. This won­der­ful pro­duc­tion ex­plores mem­o­rable mu­sic and song from the world’s great­est com­posers, in­clud­ing Gil­bert and Sul­li­van, Gersh­win, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Ham­mer­stein, Kan­der and Ebb, Leonard Bern­stein, Stephen Sond­heim, Bou­blil and Schon­berg and Stephen Schwartz. Broad­way Block­busters fea­tures an en­sem­ble cast of more than 35 per­form­ers, among them Gold Coast vo­cal iden­ti­ties, Kirri Adams, Ian Lake, Michelle Cook, Deb­o­rah Joy LeighRus­sell, St­ef­fanie Kriz, Ka­t­rina Lard­ner, Martin Jen­nings and Peter Gray. The night in­cludes spe­cial mo­ments with a chil­dren’s cho­rus who ex­plore songs from Peter Pan, Les Mis­er­able, An­nie and Sound of Mu­sic. This is all pre­sented in con­cert for­mat in a cabaret set­ting. The com­pany have moved the venue from Tweed Heads Cul­tural Cen­tre to Coolan­tatta/Tweed Heads Golf Club and have had to change their first matinee from Sun­day to Satur­day. I worked with Alton in 12th Night Theatre’s Re­becca some years ago and found him Open­ing this Fri­day night is Har­vest Rain Theatre’s pro­duc­tion of Grease at the Bris­bane En­ter­tain­ment Cen­tre. With a cast of thou­sands, the show also fea­tures the Gold Coast’s Tim Car­roll, Emily Mon­sma and Jonathon Whit­low. I’m look­ing for­ward to be­ing there on open­ing night – watch this space for the verdict.
