Opening tomorrow night, Broadway Blockbusters in Concert from Tweed Theatre Company sounds like a terrific show. Spare a thought for this production – it’s suffered some serious setbacks with their original venue (Tweed Heads Cultural Centre) still being under construction and necessitating a move to the Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Golf Club, and the husband of president Coral Kelly passing away last week. Greg Kelly was an enthusiastic and very popular member of Tweed Theatre Company and will be greatly missed. The show will feature songs from many of Broadway’s greatest musicals, and will feature some of the Gold Coast’s most popular performers – Deborah Leigh- Russell, Ian Lake, Katrina Lardner, Martin Jennings and a large cast of young people. This montage of magical musical memories has been developed by musical director Steffanie Kriz and realised on stage by accomplished director, choreographer and local theatrical identity Tracey Kriz. There are six performances only and bookings are available through Tweed Theatre Company’s website. Drinks with the Director for GCLT’s Crown Matrimonial will be held on April 26 at 6pm. It’s a terrific opportunity for audience members and theatre lovers to get a taste of what the show is about and see a snippet of the performance. For details call 5532 2096. Director Roger McKenzie has announced the cast of the next GCLT musical 70 Girls 70. It includes: Thian Sykes, Thian Sykes, Judy Neumann, Joel Beskin, Robbie Ventura, Keiri Easdown, Joe Feeney, Hazel Phillips, Henk Steenhuis, Noni Buckland, Cathy Potter, Laraine Keogh, Freddi Rutherford, Marlene Blight, Lorraine Redden and Dawn Warrington. For those who love one-act plays, there’s a terrific season coming up on Norfolk Island. With packages available including airfares, accommodation, car hire and tours, this 20th Anniversary Theatre Festival will be a wonderful opportunity to share all things thespian with your theatre friends from New Zealand, Australia and Norfolk Island. For more information call 1800 140 066. Up the highway a bit there’s a terrific theatre company called Mates Theatre Genesis. Bookings are now open for their next production, Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple: the female version. The Odd Couple is one of the playwright’s contemporary classics. Performances start June 2. In rehearsal on the Gold Coast are Tweed Theatre’s Broadway Blockbusters in Concert (opening tomorrow), Spotlight’s Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (opens May 5) and Gold Coast Little Theatre’s Crown Matrimonial (opening May 6).
