The stage is set for the Gold Coast’s first opera company to make its debut this week. It sounds like audiences are in for a real treat
The big opening this week is Opera Gold Coast’s Pagliacci at the Helensvale Cultural Centre from Friday. “Opera is the new black”, or so thinks Melanie Smart, the founder and artistic director of the Gold Coast’s first opera company. She’s taken the plunge by recruiting some of the Coast’s finest performers in a brave new production of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. Although audiences may not instantly recognise the name, this iconic opera has seeped into popular culture with its universal themes of tragic love and betrayal, with shows including Seinfeld and Batman paying homage to this classic. Book tickets at trybooking.com/otfn or call 0473 508 429. Tugun Theatre bookings are now open for the comedy Sylvia by A.J. Gurney. Sylvia is actually a stray dog, played brilliantly by Kate Learmonth, picked up in the local park by Greg (Graeme Stuckings) and taken home to his reluctant wife Kate (Pam Payne). Wellknown actor David Fraser chose this contemporary comedy for his directing debut, with great success. The opening night on May 11 includes supper, then the season continues Thursday, Friday and Saturday until May 27. To book call 0449 788 486. Javeenbah Theatre will present The Kingfisher from May 26. It’s the story of the lives and loves of three fascinating characters. As he peruses The Times obituaries, famous writer Cecil Warburton makes a discovery that has him whistling in the bath, At last, the dull Reggie Townsend has died, widowing the only woman that Cecil truly loved ... and lost. With only one thing on his mind – matrimony – he arranges to meet Evelyn under the same tree in his garden where he kissed her years earlier. This delightful comedy stars Chris Hawkins, Vivianne Yours Truly is coming up to the 14th anniversary of this column – it’s been a fabulous way to get local theatre productions news to the public (community and professional). Just a reminder folks, the deadline to be featured has now been moved back to 5pm Friday. See you in a crowded foyer!
