An oth­er­worldly cir­cus like no other is among the spec­tac­u­lar the­atri­cal high­lights head­ing to the Gold Coast in the com­ing weeks

This col­umn comes to you from the VIVID Lights Fes­ti­val in Syd­ney – lots of buzz and the­atre hap­pen­ing here. Back home, the big open­ing last week on the Gold Coast was Javeen­bah’s The King­fisher, di­rected by Nathan Schulz. A love story, the play is draw­ing good crowds and runs un­til Satur­day. Book on Javeen­bah’s web­site. The tal­ented troupe from Cir­cus of Il­lu­sion are on their way to the Gold Coast. Run­ning June 23 to July 9, the crit­i­cally ac­claimed pro­duc­tion is packed with mind-blow­ing per­for­mances un­der the big top. De­scribed as an “oth­er­worldly fan­tasy”, the show fuses cir­cus and il­lu­sion into a two-hour ex­pe­ri­ence of whim­si­cal won­der, mys­tery and drama. This colour­ful pa­rade of top cir­cus artists, clowns, jug­glers, mimes, ma­gi­cians and il­lu­sion­ists will per­form at Mitchell Park, South­port, with tick­ets on sale now. Vo­cales­cence is a women’s A Cap­pella cho­rus based in He­lensvale. As a part of Sweet Ade­lines In­ter­na­tional, the not-for-profit cho­rus is com­mit­ted to ed­u­cat­ing women in the art of A Cap­pella singing while cre­at­ing last­ing friend­ships. The ladies are still reel­ing af­ter their suc­cess at the Sweet Ade­lines Re­gional Com­pe­ti­tion in Perth where they re­ceived sec­ond place in the small cho­rus cat­e­gory, most im­proved cho­rus and fifth place over­all in Aus­tralia. Their hard work paid off! Vo­cales­cence re­hearse ev­ery Wed­nes­day from 7-9.30pm at the He­lensvale Cul­tural Cen­tre. The ladies, who work un­der the di­rec­tion of An­drew How­son, are ex­cited to wel­come new mem­bers to the group. All you need to start is a love of singing. Vo­cales­cence, in con­junc­tion with their brother cho­rus Sound Con­nec­tion, are hold­ing a Las Ve­gas-themed fundraiser and show on June 17 at the He­lensvale Cul­tural Cen­tre from 7pm. Tick­ets are $40 and in­clude a drink on ar­rival, nib­bles through­out the night and $200 of “fun money”. Check out their Face­book page for more in­for­ma­tion. It’s just over a month be­fore Bris­bane wel­comes the voices of more than 500 boys and men from across Aus­tralia for Voices from the Trenches on July 2 at Queens­land Per­form­ing Arts Cen­tre’s (QPAC’s) Con­cert Hall. The fi­nale massed con­cert is the cul­mi­na­tion of four in­tense days of “male mu­sic-mak­ing”. For tick­ets to the con­cert go to qpac.com.au or call 136 246. Opera Aus­tralia is giv­ing tal­ented sec­ondary school stu­dents across re­gional Aus­tralia the op­por­tu­nity to ex­pe­ri­ence life as an opera singer through the 2018 Re­gional Stu­dent Schol­ar­ship pro­gram. Ten Gold Coast stu­dents will have the chance to au­di­tion in­di­vid­u­ally for Opera Aus­tralia’s Cho­rus Master for their chance to be se­lected for one of the four highly sought-af­ter schol­ar­ships. The schol­ar­ship in­cludes a visit to Opera Aus­tralia’s head­quar­ters in Syd­ney for a week of opera mas­ter­classes and per­for­mances. At the end of the week, stu­dents have the op­por­tu­nity to sing for Opera Aus­tralia’s artis­tic di­rec­tor Lyn­don Ter­racini.
