An otherworldly circus like no other is among the spectacular theatrical highlights heading to the Gold Coast in the coming weeks
This column comes to you from the VIVID Lights Festival in Sydney – lots of buzz and theatre happening here. Back home, the big opening last week on the Gold Coast was Javeenbah’s The Kingfisher, directed by Nathan Schulz. A love story, the play is drawing good crowds and runs until Saturday. Book on Javeenbah’s website. The talented troupe from Circus of Illusion are on their way to the Gold Coast. Running June 23 to July 9, the critically acclaimed production is packed with mind-blowing performances under the big top. Described as an “otherworldly fantasy”, the show fuses circus and illusion into a two-hour experience of whimsical wonder, mystery and drama. This colourful parade of top circus artists, clowns, jugglers, mimes, magicians and illusionists will perform at Mitchell Park, Southport, with tickets on sale now. Vocalescence is a women’s A Cappella chorus based in Helensvale. As a part of Sweet Adelines International, the not-for-profit chorus is committed to educating women in the art of A Cappella singing while creating lasting friendships. The ladies are still reeling after their success at the Sweet Adelines Regional Competition in Perth where they received second place in the small chorus category, most improved chorus and fifth place overall in Australia. Their hard work paid off! Vocalescence rehearse every Wednesday from 7-9.30pm at the Helensvale Cultural Centre. The ladies, who work under the direction of Andrew Howson, are excited to welcome new members to the group. All you need to start is a love of singing. Vocalescence, in conjunction with their brother chorus Sound Connection, are holding a Las Vegas-themed fundraiser and show on June 17 at the Helensvale Cultural Centre from 7pm. It’s just over a month before Brisbane welcomes the voices of more than 500 boys and men from across Australia for Voices from the Trenches on July 2 at Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC’s) Concert Hall. Opera Australia is giving talented secondary school students across regional Australia the opportunity to experience life as an opera singer through the 2018 Regional Student Scholarship program. Ten Gold Coast students will have the chance to audition individually for Opera Australia’s Chorus Master for their chance to be selected for one of the four highly sought-after scholarships. The scholarship includes a visit to Opera Australia’s headquarters in Sydney for a week of opera masterclasses and performances. At the end of the week, students have the opportunity to sing for Opera Australia’s artistic director Lyndon Terracini.
