REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS STAR ERIKA GIRARDI GIVES HER OPINION ON AUSTRALIAN REALITY TV
Erika Girardi by day, kinky performer and gay icon Erika Jayne by night, she’s the Real Housewife of Beverly Hills who’s got it all – including two private jets.
So when asked to head Down Under to promote reality streaming service hayu, why would this woman who’s surrounded by the best of everything agree?
“They asked and I said yes,” she laughs.
“I’d never been to Australia and I’ve been a lot of places so, you know what? I jumped at the opportunity. I think you should go everywhere in the whole world and I was honoured to be asked.”
As it turns out, Erika is not the diva some would assume, despite her impossibly lush golden mane, a team of stylists, make-up artists and friends titled her “glam squad” in tow and those many millions in her bank account.
She’s a reality star, but in this case the emphasis is on the real.
While Real Housewives is her primary accolade, she’s also been on Young and the Restless (a birthday present from fellow RH cast-member and lifelong actress Eileen Davidson) and most recently, Dancing with the Stars.
“I believe in life you should push every day to the limit and I think that experiences are what makes your life rich,” Erika says.
“I enjoy challenging myself, being out of my comfort zone. I push everything a little too hard and that’s OK.
“You get to know yourself, you get to know other people and you have great stories to tell. Again that’s what makes life wonderful.”
With this in mind, filming for Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season eight has officially started.
It follows a tumultuous season seven for Erika where after relentless tormenting by a cast member and her husband, she broke down for the first time.
She hasn’t confirmed whether she’ll be a part of the upcoming season yet, but says she won’t let anyone else ruin her fun.
“If I were to return I think I’d be OK,” she says.
“There’s so many more great things about Housewives than bad things. I’m not going to let two people ruin my experience.
“I’m not going to allow those two people to ruin my opportunity and ruin my fun.
“I’m a grown up, a grown woman and I say bring it, I’m not going to shy away from a challenge.”
WHAT DOES ERIKA THINK ABOUT OUR REALITY SHOWS? Married at First Sight:
Couples meet at the altar for the first time and from there are “married”.
Erika: Ah, hell no, would be my answer to that. No thanks. Honestly I think marriage is a very serious commitment. I wouldn’t make that commitment not knowing the person. I think you should know the other person pretty well first. I think to find your true love it takes a long time. You have to get to know someone and know that that’s who you want to end up with. I don’t believe in love at first sight. I believe in getting to know people, finding out who they are and falling in love with that.
Seven Year Switch: Couples who have been together for seven years whose relationships are in trouble switch with other couples in the same predicament.
Erika: I think perhaps, I would hope, once you swap you realise that you do have a great partner and you need to work things out. It’s not as bad as you think. You always think the grass is greener and that we have so many problems but in reality your partner’s probably pretty awesome. So I would hope that’s what they’d take away from the show.
Last Resort: Couples whose relationship is in trouble head to an island resort together where they go through relationship bootcamp.
Erika: Yeah, I don’t think I’d be doing that on television. Sounds like a decent idea but not on TV. That makes me sad though, because to get to a place where you’re at a last resort, whether it’s an island or a place you might think you want to call it quits, that sucks. That always sucks. It’s always hard to say goodbye. All seven seasons of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills are now available to stream on hayu.com
