The ABC is getting serious about comedy, so serious it’s launching a whole channel dedicated solely to the genre.

ABC Comedy will be replacing ABC2 and, every weeknight, comedian Tom Ballard will host flagship show

Tonightly on the new channel. The topical panel show will feature skits, interviews and a team of comedic contributors including Greta Lee-Jackson ( Skit Box), Greg Larsen ( Fancy Boy) and Bridie Connell ( Whose Line Is It Anyway? Australia).

“Bridie, Greta and Greg will be working their little butts off to make packages for us for every night and will be joining me at the desk to reflect on the day’s news,” Ballard says.

“And we’ve got a whole family of contributors around the country who will also be pulling together things every now and again to get that sweet, sweet content and fill 26 minutes every night.”

The pressure is on as a new episode will air every night from Monday to Thursday, while Friday’s episode will look back on the week.

The show will have a looser, more reactive, style than some of the other weekly desk comedy shows on TV.

“We’re going to pre-tape it at 7pm, then we go to air at 9pm,” Ballard says.

“By the nature of the show and how it all rolls out, we’ll pretty much be loosey-goosey, we’ll be rolling out the taping pretty much as live. There’s not a lot of room for error, but that’s kind of fun.”

Tonightly With Tom Ballard airs weeknights, 9pm on ABC Comedy
