THERE’S MAGIC IN THE AIR
Keep an eye out for a familiar Gold Coast face in the talented cast of the latest production of Aladdin, which has QPAC audiences in raptures
Imagine a show so spectacular it receives a standing ovation before the interval. That was the endorsement from the opening-night audience of the eagerly-awaited Brisbane season of Disney’s Aladdin. Locals may spot a familiar face among the talented cast – former Gold Coast performer Max Bimbi. A National Academy of Performing Artstrained entertainer, Max has had a long run in the show. Aladdin is a blockbuster and it runs until June at QPAC. GCLT will hold its annual Dolphins Awards on March 25, celebrating the input of casts in 2017 shows Back to the 80s, Crown Matrimonial, 70 Girls 70, Lady Windermere’s Fan and Little Shop of Horrors. The public is welcome, and it’s always a great chance for performers and audience to get together for a night of theatrical networking and fun. Javeenbah Theatre is holding auditions for Pack of Lies directed by Nathan Schulz on the same day, March 25, from 2pm. Go to its website for details. It seems many of the local theatre companies are shutting down over the Games period, which is probably a good idea with so many streets out of action. More information on who’s performing in April in next week’s column. Tugun Theatre has announced the cast of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. It includes Charles – Bill Cox, Elvira – Pamela Payne, Ruth – Maria Thompson, Dr Bradman – Darren Campbell, Mrs Bradman – Judy Neumann, Madam Arcari – Del Halpin and Edith – Claudine Clarke. The Gold Coast Jazz and Blues Club is in talks with HOTA regarding the future of the club. Announcements about the year’s program will be coming soon – and hopefully some news on the venue for this very successful and wellloved organisation. The Star Gold Coast will welcome Aussie icon Barry Humphries in June. Yours truly can’t wait to see what this “retired” icon will do. Currently playing is GCLT’s Barmaids. In rehearsal is Javeenbah’s 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Beenleigh Theatre Company’s Curtains and Spotlight’s Baskerville. Soon to start rehearsals is Spotlight’s Heathers and Top Hat Productions’ The Piccadilly Olde Time Music Hall. See you in a crowded foyer real soon!
