BRACE FOR GLITTER AND GIGGLES AS SAUCY SHOW DELUXE DELUXE HITS HOTA
THE GOLD COAST WANTS SOMETHING CRAZY, IT’S A NIGHT OUT RATHER THAN SERIOUS THEATRE
Ashow now performing at HOTA is sure to stay with you weeks after you see it – partly for its provocative nature, mostly for the glitter.
Deluxe Deluxe is the latest creation of Scott Maidment, one of the minds behind last year’s sellout spectacle Blanc de Blanc.
Ask any music festival frequenter and they’ll tell you glitter sticks around long after the curtain call ... and Deluxe Deluxe is full of the sparkly stuff.
“There’s actually moments in the show where performers are fully covered in glitter,” Scott says. “There’s a lot of confetti cannons and a lot of gold and silver being sprayed across the audience.”
Premiering last week to a strong audience, Deluxe Deluxe combines the talents of extraordinary performers for a variety show of circus cabaret magic. Wild themes and outrageous acts make for an arousing show, so it’s probably best to keep the young children home for this one.
“It’s adults only because there’s a little bit of nudity, there’s a little bit of sauciness, there’s some crazy comedy,” Scott says.
“It’s live music, it’s dance, lots of comedy, singing and some crazy nonsense. It’s a great party energy we’ve created.”
Scott says since Blanc de Blanc’s two-season sellout success on the Gold Coast last year, the region has developed a feverish appetite for burlesque-style vaudevilles with old-school glamour.
“People here are interested in entertainment that’s lively and provocative and a little bit crazy, rather than seeing plays,” Scott says.
“The Gold Coast has had a history of this cabaret variety stuff from shows in the casino that happened years ago, to old-school musical stuff and I think this is the next wave of it,” he says.
“The Gold Coast wants something crazy, it’s a night out rather than serious theatre.
“In these types of shows, the performers aren’t pretending to be anything other than what they are.
“That kind of immediate interaction the performers and the audience have in cabaret is the direct result of people wanting to have a more human exchange.”
The cast features Australian and international performers Antonio Montiel, Penelope Elena, Hilton Denis, Scot Nery, Olivia Porter and Laura Michelle, with a range of skills in acrobatics, contortion, tapdancing, singing and comedy.
Deluxe Deluxe MC Scot Nery says the show is all about the audience indulging in lavish entertainment.
“We’re putting goodness on top of goodness,” he says.
“The show is about knowing too much of a good thing is never enough.”
Deluxe Deluxe shows until July 29 on Wednesday to Sunday evenings, with two shows a night on Friday and Saturday nights and matinee performances on Sundays. Visit hota.com.au/theatre/deluxe-deluxe or call 5588 4000 for tickets.
