Unhitched from bridal traditions

- MEGAN BIROT

BRIDES are challenging traditions by swapping conventional couture wedding dresses for cheaper ready-to-wear gowns.

Joanne Hasson, owner and designer at JK Couture, said brides were opting for mix-andmatch bottom-and-top styles.

“Brides are no longer buying couture and instead choosing ready-to-wear styles,” she said.

“Brides pick a bodice and a skirt and can mix and match the styles until they find the perfect combination before it gets made into a dress with whatever beading or embellishments they want for a fraction of the price.”

Top-end couture dresses can cost up to $10,000 while readyto-wear gowns start at around $1000.

Model Gabriella Dibbs said brides-to-be were more open to “unconventional” styles.

“I’ve seen women trying on coloured wedding dresses or old-school styles, which to me means brides are looking for something different,” she said.

Ms Hasson said gowns with tints of white, iridescent silvers and pale pinks were popular this year. Soft draping, high necks and sculpted silhouettes were also standout trends.
