Mr Leggett said the garden once had spectacular climbing-roses, amaryllis and poinsettias, among a number of other colourful plants.
“My mother was quite knowing I couldn’t look after it, and it was very difficult to let the house go.”
Mr Leggett said although it was an emotional sale, he was excited for the “rebirth” of the property.
“I’m really excited for the new owners to make the place special again,” he said.
“I haven’t had a chance to meet them yet but I know they will bring it back to life.
“My parents bought the house when we all moved from north Queensland.
“It is right next to the beach, I spent a lot of time pottering in my canoe down at Tallebudgeera Creek fishing. Before I retired I used to drive trucks and coming home always felt like a place I could relax.”
The house is 1km from Miami Beach and 500m to Nobby’s dining strip.
