Suns need smaller men to fire: Spida

-

terry.wilson@news.com.au (games) but unfortunately the Suns are not competitive enough going forward,” Everitt said after Port Adelaide’s pressure game exposed some glaring weaknesses in the Gold Coast line-up.

“They had enough of the ball going forward but couldn’t hold it in there.

“Unfortunately Two Metre Peter (Peter Wright) just can’t hold on to it this season and Tom Lynch kicked the one behind.

“But even if the delivery was poor kicking to the talls on Sunday, that’s when it’s the small players who hit the ball at ground level.”

Everitt called on Suns players like Jack Martin, Touk Miller, Brandon Matera and Brad Scheer to get on their bikes and work harder to avert results like the 72point loss to Port.

“Normally when the smaller blokes like Martin and Matera are doing a job on getting the ball at ground level the Suns actually go all right,” said Everitt, who these days is making a name for himself in the local radio industry as a morning show host of Gold FM.

“You look at other sides and their small forward are probably the most important factor in the competition.

“Blokes like Matera, Martin, Miller and Scheer should be running out to half-back and rebound because no one can catch them running forward.

“When they’re up and running and getting to the fall of the ball, gee, that makes a difference with small forwards tackling and locking the ball in their own 50 because on Sunday there were very few tackles made in that area.

“The smaller blokes should be at the fall of the ball at every contest and walk off the ground stuffed.

“Rocket (coach Rodney Eade) will challenge them and tell them to go out hard because they have the ability to tackle and hold the ball in.”
