Toby rapt in comeback
GOLD Coast trainer Toby Edmonds is usually a laidback character but he is excited by The Virginian’s successful return to racing.
Edmonds cheered loudly as The Virginian stormed into Stradbroke Handicap calculations by winning the Listed Chief de Beers Handicap (1050m) at Doomben on Saturday.
“I did get a bit excited but it has been a long road back,” Edmonds said.
It was the four-year-old gelding’s first run since he finished TRAINER TOBY EDMONDS sixth in a Listed race at Flemington in October.
The Virginian was a Class 2 horse when he ran third to Under the Louvre and Black Heart Bart in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap as a $101 chance last year.
Bookmakers won’t be as 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES HOST CITY generous this year. UBET have shortened The Virginian from $51 to $21 for the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 10.
Edmonds had wanted to run the horse in the spring and then come back for another tilt at the Stradbroke.
“But he had some knee problems in Melbourne and we brought him home and gave him a long spell,” Edmonds said.
The trainer had planned for The Virginian to race again at Eagle Farm in a fortnight because he felt he might have been a run short on Saturday.
“But he might go straight into the Stradbroke fresh now; we will just have to see,” he said.
The $64,000 first prize in the Chief de Beers Handicap lifted The Virginian’s overall earnings to almost $210,000.
“But more importantly the win should boost his ratings into the 90s,” Edmonds said.
