The Gold Coast accountant won the 52km open ocean race from Molokai to Oahu in 2015 and was set to go back-to-back last year until hitting rocks, causing damage to his surf ski’s rudder. He is determined to make amends for that now.
“I’d love to come away with a win, I just need to race smart,” he said.
“There are a lot more variables in ocean paddling … the tide either sucks you in or pulls you out and you want a bit of cloud cover for the long races like Molokai.
“One year I was sunburnt so badly I couldn’t look at the sun the next day.”
