One-punch attacker walks free

-

A GERMAN who coward punched a good Samaritan in Surfers Paradise is returning home after serving eight months of a two-year sentence.

Maxim Wecker pleaded guilty in Southport District Court for the attack in October last year which left Matthew Scott in hospital for six days.

Judge Katherine McGinness said it was clear Mr Scott had been trying to break up a fight when Wecker punched him from behind.

At about 3.20am Wecker exchanged words with two other men.

A fight broke out after one of them flicked a cigarette butt at Wecker’s face and called him a “Nazi” due to Wecker’s German heritage.

Mr Scott was trying to break up the fight when Wecker hit him. The punch was so hard Mr Scott fell to the ground, hitting his head.

Prosecutor Natalie Lima said Mr Scott suffered seizures and internal head injures.

Judge Katherine McGinness sentenced Wecker to two years jail with an immediate parole release.
