Pill sweet on broccoli
A CHEMICAL in broccoli can help treat diabetes, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden gave around 100 type 2 diabetes patients either a high dose of the chemical sulforaphane – equivalent to eating 5kg of broccoli – or a placebo pill daily for three months.
Those who took the broccoli pill had a 10 per cent greater reduction in blood sugar levels than those taking the placebo. Sulforaphane is thought to suppress liver enzymes that help release sugar into the blood.
