Opals shine at Asia Cup

AUSTRALIA have claimed their second win of the FIBA Asia Cup with a 107-65 victory over the Philippine­s in India.

The young Opals side dominated the match from the start, leading 68-23 at halftime and cruising home in the second half for the emphatic win over a much smaller side.

Steph Cumming topscored with 18 points, two rebounds and three assists, with Sarah Blicavs contributi­ng eight rebounds and six assists.

In their opener of the tournament, a trio of debutants helped the Opals to their first win at the FIBA Asia Cup as a veteran made a much-anticipate­d return to the internatio­nal basketball arena.

Debutants Alanna Smith, Kelsey Griffin and Mansfield all made a significan­t impact for the Opals as the Australian side beat Korea 78-54.

Smith exploded in her debut with 13 points and seven boards while Griffin scored a game-high 15 points and Mansfield chipped in six points, five assists and two steals.

Australia’s next outing at the Asia Cup is against Japan.
