Fight for Nazi treasure

BERLIN: A collection of Nazi treasure valued at more than $820 million has been pinpointed in a Bavarian wood. But it cannot be excavated because the treasure hunter who has found it has fallen out with the landowner — whose permission he needs to extract it. Hans Glueck, 76, who has quested after the hoard of gold, diamonds, artworks and rare postage stamps for two decades — claims the owner of the land wants the treasure for himself. But without the map and coordinates he has obtained down the years, “he is as blind as a mole”, says Glueck. He has lodged a claim with the German finance ministry to receive a reward of 10 per cent of the treasure’s value should someone get to it before him.

Pakistan to vote for PM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s parliament will meet today to elect a new prime minister after the disqualification of three-term prime minister Nawaz Sharif, as thousands gathered in the capital Islamabad Sunday to voice support for opposition leader Imran Khan. Mr Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League party, which enjoys a comfortable majority in parliament, nominated Mr Sharif’s longtime loyalist Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for the top slot on Saturday. Mr Sharif proposed Mr Abbasi as interim prime minister until his brother Shahbaz Sharif can contend in a by-election for the seat left vacant by his brother’s disqualification. Mr Sharif’s party holds 188 of 342 seats in parliament’s lower house and with votes from its allies is expected to obtain 214 votes. To win the top slot, Mr Abbasi needs only 172 votes.

US shows force

SEOUL: The US flew two supersonic bombers over the Korean Peninsula on Sunday in a show of force against North Korea following the country’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile test. The US also said it conducted a successful test of a missile defence system located in Alaska. The military moves come amid reports that US President Donald Trump is poised to order a military strike against North Korea “within the next year”. Senior US military sources told The Mail on Sunday that Pentagon officials have laid out plans to destroy a nuclear weapons facility operating deep within a mountain in the rogue state.

Rape victim punished

DHAKA: A manhunt is underway in Bangladesh for a woman who beat and shaved a teenager as punishment after she was allegedly gang raped by the woman’s husband. Police have arrested four men over the alleged gang rape including Tufan Sarker, a unionist linked to the ruling Awami League party, after pictures of the victim and her mother at hospital with shaved heads caused outrage. Police are still hunting Sarker’s wife Asha Khatun, who is accused of dragging the teenager and her mother to their home, beating them and forcibly shaving their heads. Sarker, 25, has been charged with raping the 16year-old at home on Friday, a local police spokesman said.
