CYCLONE Debbie’s multi-billion damage bill is both the Palaszczuk Government’s and the Turnbull Government’s problem.

Even if state governments should bear a significantly greater amount of the budget burden to rebuild infrastructure lost or damaged in such an extreme weather event, states are still part of the Commonwealth.

Hence, the Federal Government should at least offer a decent percentage of the overall costs.

The miserly pittance which the Turnbull Government has offered is an insult to all Queenslanders.

Fair enough, perhaps the Palaszczuk Government’s submission to the Turnbull Government for relief funding may have lacked detail, but the bottom line is the costings put forward were relatively accurate and not plucked out of thin air.

Barnaby Joyce might not yet be convinced about that. TIM BADRICK, TOOGOOLAWAH DEAR Mayor Tom Tate, please, have a heart! Your family recently had a massive shock that luckily turned out well.

Now how about you play God with all the creatures that your council plans to euthanase at Black Swan Lake?

Rescind the plans to wipe out yet another Gold Coast wildlife habitat. You can also tell the Gold Coast Turf Club that you want the public land back for the public (your constituents) who are the legitimate owners.

Perhaps a quote from astrophysicist Hubert Reeves best sums it up.

“Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible god and destroys a visible nature. Unaware that this nature he’s destroying is this god he’s worshipping.” ANNETTE & CHRIS SCHNACK, GOLD COAST POLICE Minister Mark Ryan is understandably under fire for his government’s poor handling of police resources on the GC (“Pollies’ cop shop fight,” GCB, 30/7).

Queensland’s second largest city has been poorly treated by a government that’s at a serious loss to manage several important issues. If areas around Pimpama and Coomera are being described as the “crime-plagued north”, then why hasn’t the Palaszczuk Government seen the light? The answer – it’s afraid to open its eyes to see reality.

“Law and order” must be one of the most highly funded responsibilities of any government but sadly the Premier’s cabinet ministers lack the guts to act adequately.

With eight months to the Commonwealth Games, is it any wonder residents are so concerned about safety on the Gold Coast?

This is one area of the public service that can support a surplus of police officers. KEN JOHNSTON, ROCHEDALE SOUTH IS ANYONE else appalled at the price of postage? Just sent a parcel to Sydney, just over 500g. It was $14.55 for normal post, $22.50 for express post. Also up to four days from Gold Coast to Sydney.

Not worth sending prezzies any more. Sometimes the value of the contents cost less than the postage. SHEZZ, GOLD COAST
