Veteran Blair keen to stay at Broncs

- RIKKI-LEE ARNOLD

BRONCOS enforcer Adam Blair says he does not want to leave the club, but may have no other choice because of the salary cap squeeze.

Brisbane confirmed last week that the prop had been given permission to consider offers from other clubs, despite the fact he was contracted to the Broncos until the end of next season.

With teams like the Warriors and Dragons both interest- ed in Blair’s services, the Kiwi captain has been weighing up his options for the future.

It is believed the Broncos have given him some idea of what kind of contract he can expect from the club if he stays on to play in 2019, but it is not a deal worth much because of the number of players they have re-signed.

Blair, a father of two, said that while he loved the Broncos and their culture, he had to do what was best for his family.

“This is a great club and I’ve said all along that I don’t want to leave,” Blair, 31, said.

“There’s some good players here and some great staff.

“But there’s a cap and they can only spend what they can afford. At times people have to leave.

“They’ve given me an opportunity to go out there and have a look around.

‘‘At the same time, don’t want me to go.

“I don’t want to go but that’s what the cap does to some players sometimes.” they

Blair said he had not had any conversations about his future similar to that of Sam Thaiday, who had been told he would not be at Red Hill beyond 2018.

Blair said he had not considered retirement. If he chose to move on, he could secure a three or four-year deal.

Meanwhile, fellow Brisbane forward Joe Ofahengaue will miss three games in the leadup to this year’s finals, after he yesterday took the early guilty plea for a dangerous throw.
