PASTA POPSICLE A SHOW-STOPPER

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

IT’S fine Italian food – but not how Mamma used to make it.

Covered in breadcrumbs, seasoned with a secret mix and slathered in dipping sauce, this deep fried lasagne on a stick will set tastebuds tingling at the Gold Coast Show this weekend.

The decadent treat has been introduced by Midway Catering owner Felicity Thomas, who added it to her menu after noticing its popularity in the USA.

“It was something I’d thought about adding before ... it hasn’t taken off in Australia yet,” she said.

Ms Thomas’s creation beat out a number of other entries after the Gold Coast Show held a social media competition asking for nominations for the best deep-fried food on a stick.

Other wacky choices available include deep-fried cheesecake, Oreos, cheese, twisted chips and Mars Bars.

Ms Thomas said she wasn’t surprised the lasagne stick had won – and expects the treat to be a big hit on show weekend.

“I think people will come to the Gold Coast Show looking for it, once they know about it,” she said.

“People are more willing to try new foods and are more adventurous than four to five years ago.”

Gold Coast Show CEO Lavinia Rampino said the lasagne stick was “melt in your mouth” delicious.

“It’s like a toastie,” he said.
