DAZZLING DISPLAY

- GREG STOLZ

LUCKY tourists have a whale of a tale to tell after this spectacular show off Surfers Paradise.

Passengers aboard the Sea World Whale Watch vessel were treated to a remarkable display of acrobatics by a giant humpback this week.

The majestic mammal breached close to the boat, thrilling those on board.

“It’s nature’s ultimate acrobatic event,” Sea World Whale Watch general manager David Robertson said.

“For a 40 tonne animal to lift itself clear of the water takes enormous energy and it’s an incredibly powerful spectacle.

“No matter how many times you witness it, it still blows you away.”

Mr Robertson said more whales seemed to be breaching more often off the Gold Coast as their numbers increased by about 10 per cent a year.

“They seem to be becoming more playful and friendly,” he said.

The whale-watching season runs for another two months.
